Readers of the Schweizer Illustrierte have voted Gersau on Lake Lucerne as the "Village of the Year". The idyllic village, nestled picturesquely at the foot of the Rigi Hochflue, impresses with its Mediterranean climate and rich history. Once known as the smallest republic in Europe, the location today skillfully combines tradition with modernity. Particularly formative is the local silk industry, which, with the company Swiss Mountain Silk, is successful worldwide all the way to the US Oval Office. Alongside its economic significance, Gersau is characterised by an exceptionally active club life and a strong community. Numerous prominent residents appreciate the high quality of life in this unique setting between lake and mountain. Mayor Sandra Häusler proudly emphasises that the success is primarily thanks to the great commitment of the citizens. There is even a local currency of its own for this: the Gersauer Gulden.
