The municipality of Weggis, at the foot of Mount Rigi, is working intensively on sustainable protective measures following a natural hazard event in the Windlochboden area on March 23, 2026. On July 6, 2026, the monitored slope revealed itself to be a highly fragmented landslide mass with large boulders, underscoring the urgency of the situation. Existing precautions, such as the closure of Zingelistrasse, evacuations, and an emergency access road, will remain in effect until a comprehensive safety plan is approved. An efficient early warning system with a detection fence, cameras, rain gauges, and GPS transmitters has been installed to alert residents in a timely manner. Tannenbergstrasse presents particular challenges, as its proximity to the danger zone prevents it from remaining open permanently, necessitating the planning of a replacement road. Those directly affected are bearing a heavy emotional burden, and the municipality is facing significant administrative, technical, and financial demands, with millions already earmarked for these measures. The Weggis municipal council, in close collaboration with experts and those affected, is seeking practical and sustainable solutions to protect people, animals, and property in the Rigi region.
