On Wednesday evening, August 12, 2026, Switzerland will witness the largest partial solar eclipse until 2075, during which the moon will cover up to 91 percent of the sun. Mount Rigi, due to its altitude, is an ideal viewing location, as the sun remains visible there for a longer period and the vantage point is above the haze layer of the Swiss Plateau.
The maximum eclipse will be reached at 8:18 p.m. – please wear protective glasses. The Rigi Railway is planning extra train services.
Various locations on Mount Rigi, such as Känzeli, Staffelhöhe, Rigi Kulm, and Rigi Scheidegg, offer unobstructed views of the spectacle, with Rigi Kulm promising the highest vantage point. Return travel options on the Rigi Railway are limited in the evening and must be carefully checked in advance. As an added highlight, the Perseid meteor shower will be visible in the dark sky above Mount Rigi after sunset.
