The planned replacement of the over 50-year-old aerial cableway from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad with a modern gondola lift is facing another significant delay. The main reason is a pending appeal against the cable car corridor in Weggis, even though the local population approved it back in 2022. Rigi Bahnen AG considers a start of construction before the current operating permit expires in autumn 2027 unrealistic. To prevent an interruption in service, discussions are underway with the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) regarding an extension of the existing permit.

On a positive note, the FOT has already granted initial approval for the construction of the new gondola lift, including building permits for the valley and mountain stations. The development plan for the mountain station in Rigi Kaltbad is also legally binding. Further building applications for the valley station, which include new bus stops and a lift, will be available for public review starting August 21. Despite this progress, the unresolved appeal remains the main obstacle to the start of the Rigi cable car project.

Conclusion: Construction of the new Rigi cable car will likely not begin in autumn 2027.
