In Vitznau at the foot of Mount Rigi, hunters shot a wild boar for the first time in October 2026. The boar, weighing around 100 kilograms, had previously caused considerable damage while rooting for food in meadows in the Gebetschwil and Brand areas. Wild boars have been spreading increasingly around Mount Rigi in the cantons of Lucerne and Schwyz for some time. While this development is leading to problems and crop damage for farmers, local hunters consider the cull, following weeks of waiting, to be a major success. Experts point out, however, that the wild boar population in the region is growing and that long-term control requires more than just recreational hunting.
