The persistent danger of forest fires in the Cantons of Lucerne and Schwyz has been downgraded from "high" to "moderate" following recent rainfall. Consequently, on the popular excursion destination of Rigi, the absolute fire ban is no longer in force with immediate effect, and has been replaced by conditional regulations.
Despite the easing of the situation, a high degree of caution remains necessary in the northern part of the canton due to lower rainfall. The authorities urge the public to use only designated fire pits and under no circumstances to discard smoking materials carelessly.
Particularly in strong winds or during approaching thunderstorms, open fires should be avoided entirely due to flying sparks. As the forest soils are only superficially damp after the hot summer, a latent risk of ignition persists. The public is requested to continue monitoring the current danger situation online at waldbrandgefahr.ch. The authorities thanked the population for their cooperative behaviour during the recent strict prohibition phase.
The absolute fire ban was lifted in the Canton of Lucerne on 10 September, and in the Canton of Schwyz on 28 August.
