In the entire Canton of Lucerne, including the popular Rigi region, an absolute ban on open-air fires applies with immediate effect from 6 August 2026. This drastic measure has been enacted due to the prolonged drought and the resulting very high risk of forest fires. The ban serves the comprehensive protection of people, nature and important infrastructure throughout the cantonal territory. It covers any kind of fire in the open air, including at official barbecue areas, in fire bowls, charcoal and disposable grills, and fireplaces. Also prohibited are the setting off of fireworks, the releasing of sky lanterns and the careless disposal of smoking materials. The only permitted exception is barbecuing using gas or electrical appliances. Current information on the risk of forest fires is available at any time on the website of the Canton of Lucerne.
