Throughout the entire canton of Lucerne, including the popular Rigi region, a total ban on open fires is in effect immediately, effective August 6, 2026. This drastic measure was enacted due to the ongoing drought and the resulting very high risk of forest fires. The ban serves to comprehensively protect people, nature, and critical infrastructure throughout the canton. It includes all open fires, even in designated barbecue areas, fire bowls, charcoal and disposable grills, and fireplaces. Also prohibited are the use of fireworks, the release of sky lanterns, and the careless discarding of smoking materials. The only exception is the use of gas or electric grills. Up-to-date information on the forest fire risk is available at any time on the canton of Lucerne's website.
