In the canton of Lucerne, due to ongoing drought and an increased risk of forest fires, an absolute ban on lighting fires in and around forests remains in place. For the upcoming National Day on 1 August, fireworks, 1 August bonfires and high-altitude fires as well as sky lanterns are prohibited throughout the entire canton. The ban also affects popular excursion destinations such as the Rigi, where nature is particularly worthy of protection. While disposable barbecues are also banned, gas barbecues and fixed fire pits may be used at a minimum distance of 50 metres from the forest. Wood-fired appliances such as pizza ovens are also permitted under strict conditions. The measures aim to prevent forest fires, which are mostly caused by human error. In addition to the fire bans, citizens are requested to use drinking water sparingly due to low groundwater levels. The authorities appeal to the population to observe the rules in order to protect the environment and minimise risks.
