After weeks of heat and drought, several Swiss cantons are easing their total fire bans due to recent rainfall. However, the reduction in forest fire danger varies greatly from region to region, which is why the total ban remains in place in many cantons such as Zürich, Luzern, Uri and Glarus, as deeper soil layers are still too dry. Cantons such as Thurgau, St. Gallen and Appenzell Ausserrhoden have converted the total ban into a fire ban near forests. In Canton Ticino, the measures were even lifted entirely following heavy rainfall.
The absolute fire ban in Canton Luzern has been slightly eased. However, it is still prohibited to light fires in forests and at forest edges. This applies within a distance of 50 metres from the forest.
On the Rigi, however, the measures remain strict: in the Schwyz section, level 4 forest fire danger applies with comprehensive restrictions. Despite the easements, the authorities continue to urge caution and patience, as widespread, long-lasting rainfall is needed for a sustained improvement in the situation.
